What to do in the event of a dental accident
Broken tooth

If possible, find the broken piece of tooth and contact your dentist immediately. Carry the tooth tip in physiological solution, saliva or milk. Depending on the fracture, the dentist can easily reattach the broken piece of tooth. Breaking off a piece of tooth doesn’t normally involve pain, but it can cause discomfort. Don’t wait to make an appointment following an accident. An on-call dentist will be able to take care of you quickly.

Lost tooth

If you’ve lost your tooth, look for it! It can be saved and successfully re-implanted. Contact your dentist or an on-call dentist immediately and do not touch the tooth roots. Transport it in physiological solution, saliva or milk. Make no mistake, losing a tooth is a dental emergency. You don’t have to wait to solve the problem. As with a broken tooth, a dentist at your nearest Adent Dental Clinic will be on hand for a rapid consultation. It’s a service we take very seriously.

Displaced tooth

Under no circumstances should you manipulate the tooth, and you should consult your dentist as soon as possible. Apply a compress in case of bleeding. Call your dental clinic so that a professional can advise you if the pain is too great. A dentist will be able to accompany you following this trauma.

There’s nothing visible

Always consult your dentist after a blow to the teeth, even if there is no visible damage. Complications can arise long afterwards. It is therefore important to document the case at the time of the fall, so that accident insurance can cover the cost. A dental emergency is not always a broken tooth or an abscess. The consequences of a blow can be detected by an Adent Group dentist.

FAQ

What is considered a dental emergency?

A dental emergency refers to a dental medical situation that requires immediate attention to relieve pain, prevent serious complications or resolve an urgent oral health problem. Here are some examples of situations that are generally considered dental emergencies:

  1. Severe pain: Intense and persistent dental pain may require immediate assessment and treatment to relieve the patient’s suffering.
  2. Dental trauma: A broken, chipped or completely ejected tooth following an accident requires rapid intervention to minimize damage and, if possible, save the tooth.
  3. Tooth infection or abscess: An infection that causes painful swelling and sensitivity around a tooth or gum must be treated promptly to prevent the infection from spreading.
  4. Excessive bleeding: Heavy bleeding following tooth extraction, oral surgery or injury must be controlled to avoid complications.
  5. Problems with dentures: Broken, ill-fitting or damaged dentures can cause discomfort and affect the ability to eat and speak.

It’s important to note that these examples are not exhaustive, and that any situation in which you experience severe pain, major discomfort or serious concern about your oral health may require urgent evaluation by a dental professional. If you find yourself in any of these situations, we recommend that you contact your dentist or a dental emergency service immediately for advice and treatment.

When should I go to the dentist?

You should see a dentist regularly for preventive exams and cleanings, and immediately in the event of pain, infection, excessive bleeding, dental trauma or other urgent oral problems.

It’s a good idea to have one dental check-up a year, to anticipate any problems that could lead to an emergency visit to your dentist. Regular check-ups with a dental professional can help to catch any oral disease in good time. Tooth loosening diseases (periodontitis) are the major cause of tooth loss in adults. Over the course of a lifetime, almost 75% of adults suffer from gum problems of varying degrees (gum inflammation, destruction of supporting tissue, tooth loss). Cavities are also a widespread disease in humans. Visiting your dentist once a year prevents the diseases you develop from affecting your teeth too deeply.

What are the opening hours for dental emergencies?

During our clinic opening hours, we always reserve time for dental emergencies. We can therefore take care of your emergency quickly. If the clinic is closed, there is always an on-call service in place. You can find the telephone numbers for each office here.

Will my regular dentist be in charge of my emergency appointment?

If you are a patient at Adent, we will of course do our utmost to ensure that your dentist can take care of you if you come in for a dental emergency. However, emergencies can arise at any time, and we prefer to take you quickly, even if your dentist is not available at the time.

If the emergency procedure requires follow-up, we will refer you to your dentist for further treatment.
