Orthodontics for CHILDREN

We recommend the first orthodontic check-up at the age of about 6 years.

Consulting early is a bonus!

Are you the parent of a child aged 6 or older? It’s time to take them to their first orthodontic check-up!

You don’t have to wait until your child is a teenager to start orthodontic treatment. At Adent, we recommend the first check-up at the age of about 6, when the baby teeth give way to the permanent teeth. An early consultation allows us to intercept certain anomalies quickly.

Orthodontic treatment is not only an aesthetic treatment, it is above all a functional treatment.

Everything you need to know about orthodontic treatment

Duration of orthodontic treatment

Orthodontic treatment takes between 6 and 30 months. Your age, the positioning of your teeth, cooperation and the degree of possible tooth movement are all factors to consider.

The younger you start treatment, the easier it is to make potential corrections in your teenage years.

Often, children between the ages of 6 and 10 can benefit from a short course of treatment, called “interceptive”, to guide the growth and development of the jaws.

Types of orthodontic treatment

There are several types of treatments, fixed or removable: traditional braces with brackets bonded to the surface of your teeth or Invisalign® clear aligners for a discreet treatment.

The steps of an orthodontic treatment

1. The first consultation with the specialist from CHF 119.

During the first appointment, the orthodontist defines the need and the possibilities of an orthodontic treatment. This is done through an exo* and endo*-oral examination.

* The exobuccal examination evaluates the integrity of the soft tissues, for example, looking for scars on the chin, possible dissymmetries, lip occlusion or dysmorphia. During the muscle examination, we look for signs of tension or pain.

* The endobuccal examination evaluates the state of the teeth, looks for infectious foci and signs of tooth wear that may suggest excessive friction between the upper and lower teeth (bruxism).

This appointment is covered by complementary insurance.

2. Documentation

During this second appointment, the orthodontist will prepare the necessary documentation for the treatment. To do this, the specialist takes :

  • A panoramic radiograph
  • A teleradiograph
  • Intra and extra oral photos
  • Two digital impressions

3. The discussion

Your orthodontist reviews your case and determines the appropriate treatment plan. He or she will invite you to a discussion session where all the details of the treatment plan are explained. He or she will show you the type of braces that will be used and will also discuss the length of the treatment.

Finally, it is also during this third appointment that you will be given the corresponding estimate.

During this appointment, you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the treatment, the estimate, payment options and insurance.

4. The beginning of the treatment and its follow-up

As soon as you have decided to start the treatment, a first appointment is scheduled according to the treatment plan. Afterwards, a visit is recommended every 4 to 6 weeks to check the progress of the treatment and to activate the device.

As you can see, the earlier the orthodontic treatment, the more beneficial it is in terms of ease and duration!
