The supporting tissues that surround your teeth are precious: take care of them!
Tooth loosening (periodontitis) is a disease that affects the tissues that support the teeth. It must be managed by specialists known as periodontologists. Collaboration between patient, periodontologist and dental hygienist is essential to optimize healing. That’s why at every Adent clinic, we bring all these professions together, to guarantee you the best possible care.
Periodontitis – tooth loosening – is a disease that affects the supporting tissues that surround and support your teeth. Destruction of these tissues can lead to tooth mobility and eventual tooth loss.
There are several stages in the evolution of gum disease.
- The initial stage is gingivitis. It affects only the gums and is characterized by inflammation: the gums bleed, are red and swollen.
- If gingivitis is left untreated, the inflammation can spread and reach the bone. The bone surrounds your teeth and holds them in place on the jawbone.
- If left untreated, the bone, ligaments and other tissues that support and surround your teeth will gradually be destroyed, leading to the loss of one or more teeth. This is called periodontitis.
A specialist in periodontal disease – known as a periodontologist – will help you heal. Close collaboration between patient, specialist and hygienist is essential for optimum success.
Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.
Nearly 75% of adults suffer from gum problems of varying degrees during their lifetime.
However, the disease can also affect young people.
How can I prevent loosening?
Gum disease can be prevented with a few simple everyday gestures:
- Using a toothbrush for optimum cleaning of your teeth
- Floss, toothpicks or brushes for thorough cleaning between the teeth, where bacteria and dirt like to lodge.
- Regular visits to your dental hygienist are another guarantee of good oral health. They’ll remove tartar build-up on the enamel surface and share health tips with you to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
Take care of your teeth and gums, consult your hygienist.
Good dental hygiene prevents the build-up of plaque and tartar on your teeth, and prevents the development and spread of harmful bacteria.
