FAQ – Dental implants and restoration

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is an artificial root – a kind of screw made of titanium, zirconia or polymer – inserted into your jawbone. The implant (screw) replaces the root of the missing tooth. The implant serves as an attachment for a dental crown or denture. For people with full dentures, the implant stabilises and improves their living comfort. Indeed, the dental implant offers an optimal hold for a lower prosthesis and eliminates the plaque of the palate for the upper prosthesis therefore allowing the patient to rediscover the pleasure of eating.

The same dental implant can also change function during a lifetime: it can serve as a support for a dental crown, then it can become the attachment for a mobile prosthesis later on.

Who is a dental implant intended for?

Dental implants are suitable for anyone with missing teeth who has enough jawbone to support the implant. Good quality and quantity of jawbone is one of the main requirements for a dental implant. Good general health is also important and is much more important than age. Dental implants may not be recommended in certain cases of chronic disease. For more information, please contact our dental implantologists.

How long does the treatment take?

The total treatment time for a dental implant depends on many factors. The following information is only a guide.

In practice, the placement of an implant and the healing process take an average of 3 to 6 months. When the healing of the implant is complete, the fabrication of the final dental crown or denture can be started. The waiting period varies depending on the complexity of each case.

How much does a dental implant cost?

The price of a dental implant depends on many factors. To draw up an estimate, the dental implantologist must meet with you and find out about your current oral condition to determine the precise cost of the dental implant. The dental treatments to be carried out before the installation are also to be taken into account (e.g. the treatment of a dental caries or the treatment of inflammation of the gums). To determine the price, the dentist needs to carry out a preliminary oral examination to assess the dental care, the feasibility of the installation and to provide you with a detailed estimate. It is always important to be able to talk to your dentist and ask any questions you may have about your future dental surgery.

1. Crown – Replace your tooth in an aesthetic, comfortable and natural way

A crown is a ceramic dental prosthesis that replaces the visible part of the tooth when it has been damaged by decay or fracture. It protects the tooth from wear and tear and allows the covering of an implant replacing a missing tooth. This method with dental veneers avoids the complete extraction of the tooth while improving the aesthetics and comfort of your smile. In a concern for quality dear to the Adent Group, the production of dental crowns is carried out by the craftsmen of our dental laboratory. This work is tailor-made, carried out in collaboration with the patient, the dentist and the dental technician.

2. The bridge – Regain your oral functions and a harmonious smile

A bridge is a dental prosthesis that replaces one or more missing teeth. It allows you to regain aesthetics and comfort in your mouth. The abutments of the dental bridge are generally located on either side of the toothless space and take the form of implants or milled teeth. The bridge rests on these abutments. It is fixed and cannot be removed. Good oral health is essential for the longevity of this dental prosthesis. Regular check-ups and scaling are required by professionals.

3. Veneers – A balanced smile with dental veneers

Enjoy a brighter, more attractive and white smile with dental veneers. This technique is suitable for:

  • Correction of tooth colour (when whitening is insufficient)
  • Enamel defects
  • Worn out, broken teeth or teeth that are too short
  • Slight misalignments of teeth (small overlaps or gaps)

A dental veneer is a small, very thin but very strong ceramic shell that is fixed to the front of the teeth. It has a predefined colour to match your smile and covers the natural tooth. Veneers are placed on the visible front teeth to correct the contour, colour and size to improve the appearance of the smile. They are custom-made to give you the best possible result, a natural effect and above all, a more attractive appearance.

4. Composites – Minimal invasion for greatest effect

Composites are materials in paste or liquid form that allow invisible restorations of broken or worn teeth through a multitude of shades.

The use of composites is common in cosmetic dentistry, especially for small to medium-sized restorations. Besides to the main advantage of aesthetics, composites allow a filling to be made without having to remove a lot of healthy tooth substance.

5. Onlays & Inlays – An alternative for bigger jobs

Onlays and inlays are good alternatives for large-volume dental composites.
Inlays and onlays are prosthetic pieces that are placed on the tooth to help rebuild a tooth that has suffered from oral hygiene problems, cavities or cracks. Unlike crowns which require a root canal, onlays and inlays can be placed on a living tooth. Inlays and onlays are particularly popular because they are very aesthetic and allow the damaged part of the tooth to be reconstructed.

Before inlays and onlays are placed, the dentist cuts the tooth to be restored and then takes a dental impression. To guarantee the best possible quality, the restorations are custom-made in our Adent 3D laboratories and in our partner laboratories from different materials such as ceramic or a combination of composite and porcelain.

FAQ – Available techniques

Crown: How much does a crown cost?

The cost of a dental crown depends on its size and location. Consult your dentist for a thorough check-up and an accurate estimate.

The bridge: Who is the bridge for?

Anyone who has lost one or more teeth can use a bridge to fill the missing space, unless the dentist has indicated otherwise.

Dental bridges repair damaged teeth or replace missing teeth. The dental prosthesis prevents the displacement, loosening and possible loss of other teeth. Chewing is made easier, so promoting optimal digestion. The smile is harmonised.

The bridge: How long does the treatment take?

The total duration of the treatment depends on many factors, which only your dentist will be able to inform you about, depending on your personal situation (absence of one or more teeth, dental implants, etc.). Do not hesitate to consult one of our dentists for an informative consultation.

Dental composites and adhesives are sensitive to moisture, so the practitioner must take special measures to keep the area of the procedure dry. The final stages are sculpting and polishing the tooth.
